Pasadena Career and Technical High School earns AVID Emerging Schoolwide Site Certification

Dr. Kirk Lewis Career and Technical High School (CTHS) was named an AVID Emerging Schoolwide Site for the 2022-2023 school year on February 8th, 2023, after meeting AVID’s implementation expectations and submitting required data documentation that supports program effectiveness and student process.

This certification was designed to assist AVID sites in achieving their college and career readiness goals that are precursors for academic success in high school and beyond.

“We are working to incorporate these research-based strategies so that once students are in college they are prepared to succeed”, said Steve Fleming, Principal of CTHS.

Since 2014, CTHS has incorporated AVID’s learning methodologies, which underscore skills such as writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading skills, into its core, elective, and CTE programs of study.

This implementation has been crucial to ensuring the success of CTHS students who plan to attend college. According to AVID.org, students nationwide, from every demographic, have out performed national benchmarks in college readiness.

Students who are first-generation, low-income AVID alumni who go to college are four times more likely to graduate than their national peers.

AVID Site Coordinator, Carol Patterson, believes this certification is a testament to the quality of work orchestrated by the CTHS AVID site team.

“I am thankful to my wonderful site team and administration for supporting me. As a site team we have been able to achieve this new status with hard work and dedication. Going forward, we will continue to strengthen our AVID strategies across campus”, said Patterson.
