Google AR Expeditions recently provided Pasadena High School students with a demonstration in augmented reality.

The school was selected to beta test the application, where students and teachers provided feedback for Google representatives.

Google’s new immersive application allows teachers to overlay a 3D image through a smartphone camera in real-time. Using positional tracking, students can walk around an augmented object and view it from any angle.

“This is so much better than just reading about a topic,” said PHS senior Preston Bell. “You actually get to see what is being described, so you have a better understanding of it.”

The demonstration included computer-generated coral reefs, dinosaurs, the human body, DNA strands and differing weather systems.

“With augmented reality, not only can students see the outside of a DNA strand, but they can go beyond the surface to see inside and critically understand a DNA sequence,” said Paula Sklenarik, technology liaison at PHS.
