Pasadena ISD students throughout the district gathered once again to compete in the annual Pasadena Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Students competing in the livestock show present their animals for judging and then put them up for auction. During the auction, community members from various chambers of commerce, local businesses and alumni organizations have the opportunity to bid on livestock and items created by Pasadena ISD students and students of neighboring school districts.

This year’s auction, held on September 24, looked different from those of previous years due to COVID-19 restrictions. Prior to the auction, students presented their livestock or items they had made in front of a judging panel and the entries were then ranked based on a set of criteria. No animals were allowed to be present at the time of the auction.

Pasadena ISD students had an impressive showing this year, with several winning the title of Grand Champion for their respective categories.

The Grand Champions are:

-Madison Lugo, Dobie High School, Rabbit Grand Champion, $4,500

-Daniel Esquivel, Pasadena High School, Heifer Grand Champion Showmanship, N/A

-Daniel Esquivel, Pasadena High School, Turkey Tom Grand Champion, $3,500

-Kimberly Sanchez, Pasadena Memorial High School, Floral Design Grand Champion, $1,500

-Marco Sosa, Sam Rayburn High School, Art Grand Champion, $4,500

Students who presented with their campus FFA programs raised $27,150 at the auction and an additional $10,200 at the after show sale, for a grand total of $37,350. Art students earned $8,500 for the sales of their works.

The funds that students raise from the auction can be used to purchase another animal or project materials for future shows and to pay for college or technical certifications.
