Six steps to a successful school year

Gaining the motivation to start a new school year isn’t always as easy as it may seem. From the sunny days of summer to the five-day routine that each school year brings, it may seem impossible to prepare for another year.

However, the start of school doesn’t always have to seem dull. In fact, here are some helpful tips that can make the transition to a new school year easier.

Here’s a list of six simple steps that students can do throughout the year:

1.  Motivate yourself.  This may seem obvious, mainly because it’s the first step to any change. Although it's a cliché, it’s almost certain that motivating yourself can help doze off those summer holidays. Find reasons to look forward to school and ways you can improve this year from the last. Set achievable goals, whether it’s your grades, your sports, your art or even your mental health.

 2. Go to sleep earlier. This might seem difficult at first, especially for those who spend their summer vacations going to sleep while the rest of the world is waking up. This takes a lot of patience and practice. Start off by going to sleep 30 minutes earlier than the time you normally would. Do this for a week, then add in another 30 minutes, until you finally have a good 8 hours of sleep. Make sure all electronics or anything that might get in the way of a good night’s rest is put away.

3.  Put an end to procrastination. Taking care of assignments right when you get home is one of the best ways to avoid any last-minute work. Procrastination can sometimes get the best of everyone, but with dedication, it isn’t impossible to put a stop to it.

4. Take a bath or a nap. School isn’t always easy. There will be times when you just need to relax. Enjoy a warm bath and block yourself from any stress you may be feeling. It’s always important to take a breather. If a bath doesn’t help you, replace it with a nap. Turn on a candle, put away your phone and sleep until you’re refreshed and ready to go.

5.  Get Involved. Getting involved in extracurricular activities is a way to figure out your interests: what motivates you and what hobbies you might want to continue with throughout the year. It’s also a great way to socialize with a group of people that share the same passion you have for a certain activity.

6. Buy a planner and use it. A simple step, but a very beneficial one. Keep your life organized! Write down every goal or task you must do that day and accomplish them. The satisfaction of getting business done is a lot more rewarding than one may believe.

So, there you have it! Six simple steps that can make this upcoming school year the best one yet!  PISD wishes the best of luck to all our students, parents and faculty & staff. See you August 19!
