i80688   Sam Rayburn High art teacher Victor Raygoza was a little surprised on Tuesday when a parade of representatives from the Houston Texans organization and Texans guard Wade Smith dropped by his upper level art class unannounced.
Raygoza, who was nominated by art student Tania Lara, was selected as the Houston Texans Stars in the Classroom recipient, an award for Houston area teachers who have made a significant impact in the life of a student.
"When I first started in the art program at Rayburn, I wasn't sure if I would continue in it, because I didn't think I was very good," said Lara. "Mr. Raygoza saw potential in me and always told me to never give up."
Lara said it was the daily encouragement and respect she received from Raygoza that led her to submit a nomination form to the Texans organization.
"He has been a great teacher," said Lara with tears forming in her eyes.  "Now its my senior year and I am just so thankful to have had him."
Both Lara and Raygoza received an autographed football signed by Smith and other Texans players. Raygoza also received two complimentary tickets to a Texans home game a $500 donation to the district in his honor.
