Heather Boyd Heacock, a parent volunteer at Gardens Elementary was selected as the state's 2013 recipient of the Golden Afterschools Centers on Education (ACE) parent award.
The Texas Golden ACE Award recognizes leaders who have made a difference in the lives of after-school students and their families.
According to Janice Brody, Pasadena ISD’s Family Engagement Specialist, she has certainly accomplished that.
“Heather is an outstanding role model for children, other parents and the entire Gardens staff,” Brody said. “She is making a tangible difference with positive impacts.”
Heacock has served several leadership roles for Gardens Elementary’s ACE program. In the winter of 2013, she helped plan and facilitate special events such as the Cinco De Mayo Fiesta and the Water Wrap-Up Party. She became a leader within the Parent Advisory Council, in which she was immediately voted president of the organization by other parents.
Rebecca Bright, Gardens Elementary’s ACE coordinator said Heacock has been instrumental in engaging parents and ensuring that all needs are met.
“She was excellent at letting our parents know they were needed, wanted and appreciated,” Bright said. “Heather consistently speaks at our family engagement activities and lets parents know they have a voice within the school environment. No matter the need within the program, Heather is there.”
Heacock has three children attending Gardens Elementary.
