Beverly Hills Intermediate recently hosted the eighth annual PISD May Chess Championship.

Twenty-seven PISD schools, three Deer Park ISD schools and one private school took part in the event, totaling 222 competitors.

“The game of chess helps students build problem solving skills, memory and concentration as well as good sportsmanship,” said Leslie Axel, advanced academics coordinator for Pasadena ISD. “Participating students learn new strategies from their opponents as they make new friends.”

Volunteers, campus administrators and central office personnel cheered on the chess enthusiasts as they put their skills to the test.

“My profuse thanks are due to all the campus chess coaches and other adult volunteers who came and helped,” said James Early, PISD chess coordinator. “Thanks are also due to our scorekeepers, hall monitors, and to the custodians who cleaned up after us.”

Each participant competed in five games and received one point for each win and a half-point for each draw.
