Seven Pasadena ISD schools are about to get a little more healthy. The Pasadena High School construction technology class recently finished building 21 planters that will be delivered to the following campuses:

• Kruse Elementary
• Bobby Shaw Middle School
• DeZavala Middle School
• Southmore Intermediate
• Williams Elementary
• South Houston Elementary
• Gardens Elementary

The schools will receive three planters each, in which students will plant, grow, and eventually eat healthy vegetables.

"I'm a gardener at heart and I find it fascinating for kids to see how food grows," said Victoria Harris, PHS construction technology teacher. "So I relish any opportunity to share such an experience with our schools and community."

The School Garden Beds project is supported by the Pasadena Vibrant Community, an initiative developed by The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and made possible by an investment from, and through collaboration with, the Shell Oil Company.

Its mission: to mobilize Pasadena in promoting health and wellness in the community, uniting individuals, schools, businesses, government agencies, health care providers and policy-makers in carrying out community-led solutions that will make positive and long-lasting changes in people’s health.

"This project represents what the Pasadena Vibrant Community is all about: a true collaboration among multiple departments to promote a healthy way of living," said Amber Macneish, PISD health and wellness coordinator. "In this case it's encouraging healthy eating through the use of school gardens."
